- QUESTION: Sometimes when my 6 year old son comes down with a fever and is
- sick, I notice a swelling in his neck. I have often wondered what makes these
- bumps, and whether they are a sign of anything very serious. Since I read
- your column every time it is printed, I was hoping you could give me that
- information in your column. I am sure other mothers would also be interested.
- Thank you.

- ANSWER: Those "bumps", which may occur in other parts of the body as well as
- the neck, result from lymph glands that can become swollen when infection
- strikes. In many cases they result from a viral infection or minor bacterial
- infection, and disappear when the infection has run its course. They are
- commonly seen in the neck, the groin, and the armpit. When there is a
- swelling between the ear and the angle of the jaw it may be a sign of mumps.
- When a sore throat precedes the gland swelling in the neck area, tonsillitis
- may be the cause, and antibiotics are indicated. If there is an infected
- wound or scrape, the lymph glands in the area may become swollen. The glands
- are part of the lymphatic system, which play an important part in the body's
- defense against infections. If the swelling remains for longer than a few
- days, or if all the glands in the body seem swollen, it is time to consult
- your physician for an answer.
